Vacancy description

Are you an experimentalist interested in research done with free-electron lasers? Are you enthusiastic about developing technology and instrumentation, maintaining and performing complex experiments in a world-leading research infrastructure? Join our team at HFML-FELIX as a Research Infrastructure Support Officer at our international user facility, the only lab in the world where high-field magnets and free-electron lasers can be combined.

The position

As a Research Infrastructure Support Officer your primary responsibility will be to develop new and existing experimental platforms, to engage in research activities with those platforms to take part in the coordination of the user program, and to coordinate instrumentational developments and innovations to keep FELIX at the forefront of the international scientific community of ultrafast laser techniques. You will develop and maintain a suite of experimental platforms, and you will work alongside internal and external users performing state-of-the-art experiments in the free-electron lasers. To do so, you will develop in-depth knowledge of our scientific techniques which are applied to study non-equilibrium phases of matter, such as two-colour THz-visible pump-probe, single-shot time-resolved microscopy, or high-harmonic generation in solids, using the radiation of FELIX as a main instrument.

You will work independently as well as together with other scientists and technicians on different scientifically and technically challenging projects. You will also have the opportunity to develop some of your own research ideas alongside those of the senior scientific staff, to a maximum of 30% of your time.

This vacancy initially offers a position for two years, in which the framework for new and existing experimental platforms will be build. When the implementation of the new experimental platforms is successfully completed, it is possible to retain this position after two years. At this point, the focus of the position will change from the development to maintenance of the new platforms with the primary goal to scientifically support the HFML-FELIX international user program facilitating the (technical) execution research of in-house and visiting scientists.
